Guest Badges

Guests (visitors, volunteers, authorized vendors, contract employees, and/or medical observers) who require services and/or access to certain high risk areas or facilities at the University of Minnesota are required to have a guest badge issued for visual identification.

Guest badges have a similar design as Security ID badges, but feature only the department name, expiration date, number, and guest role. Guest badges do not include a photo.

Guest badge procedure:

  • Departmental Security Coordinator or Guest Badge Manager requests guest badge(s) using the Badge Management System (BMS)
  • The Authorized Badge Pick Up Person (usually the Primary Security Coordinator) will receive an automated email when the badge is printed
  • The Authorized Badge Pick Up Person will retrieve guest badge(s) from U Card office

Departmental Guest Badge Manager or Security Coordinator should distribute and track guest badges each day using BMS or, at minimum, a Visitor Log Sheet to track guests daily.

Departments may provide guests that will be onsite for more than one day with the Guest ID acknowledgement form. These guests are still required to sign in and out each day on the Guest log sheet.

Guest badges expire five years from the print date. The badge indicates month and year of expiration.
