Using the Wireless Network
University Access
Authorized wireless users will find information about the wireless network online, including login and setup instructions. Users who have an x.500 account are required to use the "UofM" or "UofM Secure" networks. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) strongly recommends that all users set up the devices they connect to the wireless network to use the "UofM Secure" wireless network when possible to ensure data security.
Guest Access
Guests to campus may use the "UofM Guest" network which has access to the internet only.
OIT offers customers with Service Gateway access the ability to create and manage Guest accounts at no charge. This option is recommended for guests on campus who need a full bandwidth connection or who transmit sensitive data needing encryption. Service Gateway wireless account management offers the following features:
- Ability to designate account creators
- Adjustable date and time
- Ability to remove access
- Secure passwords
Responsibilities
Wireless users and University guests are expected to abide by the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources Policy. Departmental Service Gateway representatives are responsible for ensuring guests abide by the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources Policy of the University. Failure to abide by the policy will result in termination of access.
Extending the Wireless Network
University students, staff, faculty, guests, or units are expected to follow the Wireless Networking Infrastructure Policy of the University. Additional wireless networking equipment may not be attached to the University network to extend or replicate service. Any wireless device that is not managed by OIT will be considered a rogue device, and is subject to detection and immediate removal from the network. OIT will at best effort communicate this change to the appropriate user or unit. If you suspect your wireless access has been terminated you may contact 1-help on campus (612-301-4357) for information.

The Office of Information Technology may make exceptions to this policy. To submit a request, please send e-mail to the Policy Contact.
